IC

NAME: Jing Yuan
AGE: ~1100, physically early 30s. Mentally he is a "mature" man of his society and eligible for retirement, around 65.
SUITABILITY: N/A
CANON: Honkai: Star Rail
CANON POINT: Patch 1.5

ABILITIES:
Lightning-Lord: The full name is the Lightning-Wielding Thunder-Clapping Spirit-Squashing Lord, but the name is too long, so Jing Yuan has shortened it for convenience. It is a giant, golden, electric armored soldier spirit which Jing Yuan summons at will with rippling golden energy and golden spiritual scrolls, granted to him by the Aeon of the Hunt when he became Arbiter-General of the Luofu. It's about 10x his size and mimics his movements to the point restraining him hinders it some, though it has a small amount of movement independence. See this anime short for some of his background and an example of the Lightning Lord. Also this gif as another reference for its usual size.

Qi manipulation: Jing Yuan can float when using his abilities by manipulating the energy of his core esse, or qi. This manipulation also allows him to lift things thousands of pounds in weight— his weapon apparently weighs 13,500 catties.

Lightning abilities: As an Emanator of the Hunt, he has an affinity lightning abilities and is able to channel electricity through his weapons and his body.

Homo-Celestinae Physiology: When his ancestors ate from the fruit of the Ambrosial Arbor and gained immortality, it permanently altered their physiology into becoming a new species of human, homo-celestinae. One of the differences in their biology between them and short-life humans are enhanced regenerative capabilities. Jing Yuan heals remarkably fast, so well enough that he was able to return to his post as Arbiter-General in roughly a few weeks after being impaled completely through his stomach. This enhanced healing also allows him to regrow limbs and organs that have been removed or destroyed, although with the necessary healing time.

Highly Intelligent/Expect Tactician: Jing Yuan is so well known for playing 4D chess with any sort of battle or strategical situation that he is given the title 'Divine Foresight' as it's as if he was given divine knowledge to predict what will happen. He doesn't actually have precognition despite it existing within the Xianzhou; his ability to accurate predict situations comes down to meticulous intelligence gathering and genius intellect.

VICES:
Self-Sacrificial: Jing Yuan is in a position he never wanted to do; he wanted to be doing something else with his life and tells people as such. He also frequently laments his complete lack of time and the dullness of his life, but since he has such an important job, he always defers to things that need being done rather than what he wants to do. He yearns for freedom but won't give himself that opportunity. His denial of his own desires runs down to the diminishment of his own feelings, pretending he isn't as close to people he cares immensely for, like his old master Jingliu, or the retainer he raised from a baby, Yanqing. The old man also has a reputation among his colleagues for bending the rules and taking risks that bring scrutiny (that he doesn't want) upon him, but the circumstances he does so almost always involves the people he cares about— the risks he takes and the effort he puts into are often not mutual. He doesn't ask for it to be.

Intemperence: This might sound opposite of being self-sacrificial, but it's a side effect of it. When Jing Yuan really has the freedom or opportunities, his impulse control goes out the window. He bought a lion at one time after being tricked into believing it was a cat— he didn't think to question it because it's cute. That genius intellect just turns off when he's in impulse mode. Even with restaints, he has a habit of feeling around the corners, first taking an action and explaining it away later.

VIRTUES:
Resilience: Despite all the hardships that Jing Yuan has been through, people can count on his ability to stand strong. That doesn't stop him from receiving strongly worded letters reminding him of his importance to the Xianzhou and its stability, but he isn't reckless despite how it might appear to the outsider. He takes calculated risks. His ability to withstand and endure pretty much everything that is thrown at him is also enough to confuse others. Jing Yuan likely just feels that he has to be the one to keep enduring for everyone else, so he does.

Kindness: Jing Yuan has a lot of virtues but his overall kindness towers above all the others. He's a friendly and casual man, asking all those who work closely with him in his office to call him by name instead of "General", but that's just one example. He's an excellent friend, the type that would give you the clothes off his back in a snowstorm, and a reasonable and attentive father. He doesn't have much free time, so when he can't spend time with friends and loved ones he still supports them in other ways— money, access to experiences, or just trying to improve their quality of life.

SURVEY

▶ I REGULARLY MAKE NEW FRIENDS.
3.
Jing Yuan is a charismatic and outgoing person. He is loved and admired by many— people on the Xianzhou idolize and fetishize him similar to a fictional character or a celebrity due to his legendary status. Unfortunately, he does not have many friends in the present day as Arbiter-General. He is often way too busy in his role for much of a leisure time and his status makes it difficult to get close to people. He feels guilt for being unable to keep past friendships from crumbling apart. He's friendly, but he doesn't confide in people like true friends easily.

That doesn't mean he doesn't yearn for friendship. In a scenario where he doesn't have the burden of his role as Arbiter-General, as evidenced from his mischievous nature as a lieutenant, it would be much easier for him to make friendly acquaintances. True closeness still would take time, as the walls that Jing Yuan has erected to protect himself from painful memories are centuries old now.

▶ SEEING OTHER PEOPLE CRY MAKES ME WANT TO CRY TOO.
4
Jing Yuan is kind heart and empathetic. He can empathize easily with most people, even those with wildly different experiences— though legendary, the High Cloud Quintet were described as a group of misfits and outcasts and they found friendship despite their differences. His experiences with hardship with his friends and homeland in his youth has made Jing Yuan grow into a compassionate and caring old man, one whose heart aches for the people he is responsible for and those he loves.

However, Jing Yuan's warm smile hardly ever shifts from his face, even when he feels like crying. Though obviously feeling emotional pain at being put through situations where he has been helpless to do anything for those he cares for, he has never cried, only showing his distress with a tilt of his head or a waver in his voice. Jing Yuan remains the pillar standing for others to lean on.

▶ I OFTEN MAKE A BACKUP PLAN FOR A BACKUP PLAN.
1
"The Divine Foresight, one of the Seven Arbiter-Generals. Although his appearance may be one of indolence, he is more meticulous than seemingly meets the eye."

Known as another playful nickname as "The Dozing General", Jing Yuan presents an air of laziness that often makes his opponents feel unimpressed with him. It's so convincing that even those who hail from different Xianzhou ships know him as an inactive general that never does anything. The true reality could never be further from what is presented by the man. Jing Yuan only gets to appear rather lazy because he is in fact actually rather busy.

"For all of my life, I've been scared of trouble. There are major troubles and minor ones, distant ones and close ones. They need plans, preparations, and all things that need effort..."

Under his leadership, the Luofu has maintained an unusually long tenure of peace which can be attributed to the fact that his style as Arbiter-General is to prevent disasters before they happen. Establishing and maintaining a routine is something he finds importance in for establishing a peaceful life. He also attempts to remain prepared for any potential threats and issues, constantly overseeing a huge overflow of information so he can properly plan.

▶ I USUALLY STAY CALM, EVEN WHEN UNDER A LOT OF PRESSURE.
1
"The general has experienced many hardships, any one of which would be enough to break the spirit of an ordinary Xianzhou citizen... but he seems to handle it all with grace. He must have his own way of coping." - Hanya

Xianzhou natives all face an inevitable degenerative affliction called becoming "mara-struck", which scientific experts believe is caused by the accumulation of memories until they can no longer be stored in the brain, leaving only the most extreme memories which causes the person to descend into madness. The average "lifespan" of a Xianzhou native before this affliction is 800 years, with soldiers being more common to become afflicted due to the mental strain of war. It is also noted that very few Arbiter-Generals have made it past the century mark, and Jing Yuan stands apart from them with his unusually long reign of 720 years. Even at high risk of losing himself to madness, Jing Yuan remains resolute against it, showing no symptoms.

Even those who would be experts on mara-struck are mystified by Jing Yuan's resilience. He has become well known for his calm and casual demeanor; the Cloud-Knights of the Luofu can depend upon him for keeping a level head even when the situation looks particularly dire. The reasons for this aren't entirely explained— though likely it is due to the fact the General keeps his focus on the best potential outcomes, the good in the present situation, and finding ways to clear his thoughts and help himself focus such as meditation.

▶ I AM VERY SENTIMENTAL.
1
"I understand the one I wished to trace... exists now only in memory. But it's probably what's best for him."

Dwelling on the past is something that is both bad for his mental health and his physical health as a long-life human, but since his kind heart can't seem to contain all the feelings he has about everything, it sort of spills over anyway. When Jing Yuan cares about something or someone, he cares very deeply— it's an undeniable love, even if he attempts to be subtle about it. As the 'one left behind' of his friends of five, what he has left of them is very precious to him. In some ways, he displays this by keeping physical tokens; the forgemaster Yingxing (Blade) created his signature guando, Starfall Reverie, and Jing Yuan continues to use the weapon to this day. The Seat of Divine Foresight, where he conducts his business, is also decorated with various other weapons his friend made in his lifetime.

Sometimes, it's a bit more subtle. His friend Baiheng is long since gone, but part of her lives on in the young vidyadhara High Elder, Bailu. Bailu specializes in healing, and Jing Yuan will often fake feeling ill just to come visit her, spending his time asking her about herself and how she is doing and neglecting his own pretend ailment before he has had his fill and slinks off. He does this because he just wants to see her, to be reminded of Baiheng, and his fondness for Bailu for being what is left of her.

He shares the same sentimental feelings for Dan Heng, the reincarnation of his friend Dan Feng. Dan Heng had a rough start in life, having hatched in prison as he was forced to continue to serve out the sentencing of his predecessor; he was all that Jing Yuan had left of his friend, so he did all that was in his power to utilize his political power to grant Dan Heng a life of his own, even if it was in exile. When Dan Heng returned, Jing Yuan could not contain his affection for the visage of his old friend, mistakenly calling him Dan Feng, but accepting the correction. He misses Dan Feng terribly, but acknowledges that Dan Heng is not his old friend and is a new person. Still, the nostalgia makes him desire to know how Dan Heng is doing, often asking the Trailblazer about him.

▶ EVEN A SMALL MISTAKE CAN CAUSE ME TO DOUBT MY OVERALL ABILITIES AND KNOWLEDGE.
4
""History will make its own judgment, but I have no interest in my legacy."
"If I succeed, history will state that I am currently supremely confident in my masterful strategy."
"But if I fail, then history will state that I am currently neglecting my duties in wanton pleasure, preferring finches over my people."

Due to his role as Arbiter-General, Jing Yuan cannot allow himself to really ever feel too much doubt in himself and his decisions. This was also something drilled into him since he began his military training in his youth and tutelage under Jingliu and he has taken it to heart— A Cloud-Knight must never falter, nor shall they let slack in their form." Blade mentions that Jing Yuan in his youth would have never admitted defeat, but in his old age he matured beyond it now taking his losses with grace and sometimes admiration for his opponent. He gracefully embraces the flaws that others have pointed out— he is not known for his martial prowess for example, and his intellect is what caught the attention of others, but he feels no insecurity about it. Instead, mistakes and insecurities are incorporated in his further plans to be worked around.

"Am army must be of one heart and mind, or skillful slight of hand is little use. The Cloud-Knights entrusted their lives to me. I shall not fail them."

The fact that negative feedback simply just seems to roll off him likely contributes to his long and successful reign as General. Jing Yuan chooses to focus his mind on what he has done right, or what he could do right, and gives him an overall positive outlook.

▶ I AM MORE INCLINED TO FOLLOW MY HEAD THAN MY HEART.
5
As Arbiter-General, Jing Yuan has devoted himself entirely to the Xianzhou Alliance and the people of the Luofu, binding himself to his duty to protect them and the divine mandate of the Hunt given to him by the celestial Aeon, Lan the Reignbow Arbiter. Though the history of his decisions, he has appeared to choose duty over love— His beloved friends Dan Feng and Yingxing chose to break an unpardonable sin (resurrection/immortality) in the Xianzhou out of love, unable to deal with the loss of their friend Baiheng. Jing Yuan supposedly did nothing to stop them or aid them, and his first act as Arbiter-General was the sentencing of Dan Feng with a aggrieved waver in his voice.

"However, general, you have arbitrarily terminated his sentence and decided to exile Dan Feng. Was this a consensus reached after a discussion with the Six Charioteers? And was this sent to the marshal to be confirmed? If your action stemmed from your past friendship with Dan Feng, then we regret to inform you that we cannot accept such a sentimental gesture..." — Shaoying, Vidyadhara Preceptor

Thinking that he is all logical thinking and no heart couldn't be furthest from the truth. His single biggest motivation out of everything is love. He never wanted to be General, but Jing Yuan did his best with the raw hand he has been dealt, torn between his immense love and duty to the Luofu and his love for his friends. It's his love that makes him bend rules and take blame for consequences, if just to make life easier and ease some of the suffering for those he cares for. His love can also be somewhat selfish— in one such example, he made several excuses that it would be difficult to replace his Head Guard when he requested to be sent to the front lines, though his assistant later clarified it was simply because Jing Yuan would be devastated if he would become mara-struck. Another time, Jing Yuan had captured the highly wanted criminal, Blade, but as they had a shared history of friendship Jing Yuan conveniently allowed the other man escape after interrogation.

▶ I AM PRONE TO WORRYING THAT THINGS WILL TAKE A TURN FOR THE WORSE.
4
To solve issues and make plans, Jing Yuan has to prepare for worst case scenarios. He spends a lot of time considering the pros and cons of decisions and what might end in a negative result, but these are things that he has to consider realistically. If he simply ignored all possibilities of failure or disaster happening, then he would not be able to handle issues as they arise with the grace he manages to. It doesn't quite affect him in a way that would paralyze him— it makes him more proactive, especially in instances of worrying about his friends.

In one such example, his worry that assassins might attempt to kill the young Dan Heng now that he had returned to the Luofu after his exile prompted Jing Yuan to disregard his own injuries and escape the hospital to personally ensure that Dan Heng would be safe. Not that he expressed as much to Dan Heng, downplaying his own injuries and how he felt when prompted by the younger man.

▶ I ENJOY WATCHING PEOPLE ARGUE.
3
Whether or not Jing Yuan enjoys the argument is highly situational. When he was young, he was known to be rather mischievous and he would often go and purposely bother his friend Yingxing, a short-life human, just out of pure enjoyment of their bickering. He looks back upon it rather fondly. The general's also known to purposely antagonize his opponents in both serious military combat and also just in friendly chess games, having a streak of competitiveness. He is an instigator, not entirely someone who just likes watching— one of his strategies as General is breaking the enemy's strategi and watching them argue and scramble with confusion. One more notable example involves secret notes between would-be assassins expressing their frustration and bickering with each other over Jing Yuan messing with their plans, with a particular note on the general's penchant for just not showing up to work things they expected him to. In more recent times, Jing Yuan has taken up the hobby of trolling online forms on his lunch breaks—

RealName_Online: Is this more believable than me being the Emperor of Primeval Imperium?
MostHandsome@AurumAlley: Believe you me, my information is pretty authoritative. Not to brag, my classmate's fourth uncle's godmother's ex-husband worked at none other than the Seat of Divine Foresight.
RealName_Online: Hi, I'm the Emperor of Primeval Imperium, gimme money.

The situation changes when it becomes arguments between those he cares about. Although he remains a witness, Jing Yuan usually does nothing to step in and interfere, instead just watching with a heavy heart as old friends have turned on each other. He feels powerless in these situations and finds no enjoyment out of them.

▶ I TEND TO AVOID DRAWING ATTENTION TO MYSELF.
3
The attention that Jing Yuan desires is highly situational. He had no aspiration to become Arbiter-General, having only simply desired a life of adventure that didn't involve toiling away at a desk under mountains of work— jokes on him, as that is what his life has become. As a legendary figure and the leader of hundreds of thousands of people, attention is something he is entirely unable to avoid, It mostly blends into the background and he takes it with grace. There's a thriving market for fanfiction and movies featuring exaggerated acts of heroism, love, and betray between him and companions of the past. There's a secret market for his paparazzi photographs.

Jing Yuan would much rather be spending his time somewhere quieter, with few things to bother him. When he finally gets to visit the Astral Express, he laments how he'd love to spend his days lounging upon the couch just listening to the phonograph and watching the stars. His dedication to his duty as the Luofu's Arbiter-General thrusts him into a position of attention he cannot escape, no matter how he wishes.

When he wants to remain actually unseen, he does excel at this. Jing Yuan gathers much of his intelligence himself, often remaining unnoticed even as he physically trails someone. He's also been shown able to sneak out of what is essentially a guarded hospital when he's been injured, as well as often just telling people he is going and no one is able to discern his current whereabouts as he executes some sort of plan.

▶ I OFTEN DO THINGS AT THE LAST POSSIBLE MOMENT.
2
Theoretically, Jing Yuan never waits until the last possible moment to do something. He's incredibly proactive to the point of having multiple plans and keeping to schedules, but it's this sort of meticulous planning that does often lead to a pattern where often others just have to put their faith into that he knows what he's doing because he isn't sharing the details.

Only waiting until the last possible second, when all things have seemed to fallen into place where he does finally share his findings and final plans. Most of the time, this is on purpose, and usually comes with an apology. Rather do and ask forgiveness afterwards than ask first and be denied.

▶ I FIND IT EASY TO EMPATHIZE WITH A PERSON WHOSE EXPERIENCES ARE VERY DIFFERENT FROM MINE.
2
"Unfortunately, the Alliance would never allow a short-life species to run the Artisanship Commission. He was only able to prove his worth alongside us outcasts in the end." — Jingliu, in reference to Yingxing joining the High Cloud Quintet

Despite his fame now, in his youth Jing Yuan was considered an outcast in his youth. It might seem in contrast to his outgoing personality, but it only contributed to it; his bold friendliness allowed him to make friends with those who would be normally very difficult to have a friendship with. His friend Yingxing (Blade) was a short-life human who face discrimination for counting their lifespans in only decades and considered to be incredibly arrogant, but as a boy he was known to constantly be at his forge bothering him.

Jing Yuan also notably went and often bothered the High Elder of the Vidyadhara, Dan Fang, and was described as often having tea and shooting the breeze with him, unbothered by his own pride. His own master, the Sword Champion Jingliu, was noted to be cold and distant with her focus on the true meaning of the sword— despite Jing Yuan's attempts to downplay their closeness in their voice lines, anecdotes from Jingliu herself denote a fondness between them. Jingliu is clearly proud of him.

Even in the present, despite the fact he doesn't get too much leisure time to meet with people, Jing Yuan still remains highly empathetic to others and is considered to be very wise. He's a shifu now himself, having raised his retainer, Yanqing, from infancy and he uses his experiences with others to help guide his young apprentice with words of advice about restraint and confidence. Even in situations where an enemy would rather see him eliminated (which is often), if he gets a conversation in he can find himself empathizing with their desire to destroy him. It's fairly clear when he doesn't agree though. He does like being alive.

▶ I BECOME BORED OR LOSE INTEREST WHEN THE DISCUSSION GETS HIGHLY THEORETICAL.
5
"I like to study starchess puzzles in books when I'm free, but there are only so many of them. Once I've solved all the puzzles, I still need to seek out real opponents."

A military career wasn't exactly something that had been Jing Yuan's dream; when asked what he would have wanted instead, he confesses as a child he wanted to be a Galaxy Ranger, seeking life of adventure. On another occasion, he has said in the present day if he was free of his duties he would like to spend his time looking at animals that are extinct on the Xianzhou (see: he wants to be Space China Steve Irwin). He comes from a family that have been scholars for generations, with his parents' expertise being in the study of the history of the Xianzhou, and viewing the work to be boring and tedious Jing Yuan simply wanted to do something different and more exciting.

While he did manage to change his role, unfortunately Jing Yuan didn't manage to escape the same fate as them as it wasn't really his strength or martial prowess that made his career, but rather his genius intellect and interest in information. Though with the body of a jock, he really is a nerd at heart, and has been noted to have read all the books on starchess and other more foreign forms of chess on the Luofu and now that he has access to it, has been devouring the Astral Express' data logs on other worlds. He loves to talk about strategi and listen to others talk about scientific theory— provided someone he finds interesting is the one talking about it.

The opposite could be said for him from demonstration. Jing Yuan is known for nodding off during conversations he finds a bit dull, like discussion over mundane things like parties he doesn't want to attend or clothing he doesn't want to get fitted for. This is on purpose, since he perks right up when people arrive or topics shift to things he finds more interesting.

▶ I RARELY FEEL INSECURE.
3
When it comes to himself, Jing Yuan very rarely feels insecure. One of the hallmarks of his personality is his confidence in himself, much to the frustration of his enemies. He has been known to almost showboat for opponents and trash talk them with the intent of aggravating them into distraction. He's confident in himself in a way that almost borders on arrogance— he told an opponent that they were not worthy of facing him at their current level —but he isn't confident in the way of being blinded by hubris. Jing Yuan knows his current limits and picks his battles.

When it comes to those he cares for, some of that confidence begins to crack. Dan Heng is the reincarnation of his close friend; they don't share a connection, though due to his history Jing Yuan yearns to be close to him. Rather an approaching him directly, he instead focuses himself on acts of distant kindness, helping behind the political scenes to make Dan Heng's life more comfortable. He feels insecure about his right to even try to be close to him, keeping himself distant as if just his presence is an uncomfortable burden to the younger man. He's done similar for his other friends in the past, doing what he can to make them comfortable during painful times, while also keeping himself at a distance and bottling his own pain inside.

▶ I AM STILL BOTHERED BY MISTAKES I MADE A LONG TIME AGO.
4.
Jing Yuan feels regret and sadness over what happened with the Sedition of Imbibitor Lunae. It's clearly something that weighs heavy on him, having had to deal with the fallout of it politically and emotionally for centuries. He has done everything in his power to try and make things as 'right' as they can be— leaving Jingliu and Blade alone, changing Dan Heng's sentencing from torture and imprisonment to exile —but the thought of what he could have done differently does still cross his mind at times. In recent events, he has had to face the past once again in order to settle it for good, a final gathering between the High Cloud Quintet. Survivor's guilt is hard to avoid, and as his friends fought once more, the pain was clear on his face.

"When the Vidyadhara are reborn, they are as fish that have returned to the ocean... it is a state of complete freedom. That I may glance upon him from the shore is enough for me."

When survival in his old age depends on keeping a level head, despite his painful past Jing Yuan tries keeping his eyes to the present. He is happy to see Dan Heng free in ways that his friend Dan Feng never was able to, and expresses joy to hear that he is doing well, even if they aren't necessarily close. Now that he has had the chance to finally settle everything, he is much more at ease with the past. Even with all the the pain and loneliness, it was a life worth living to see his friends finally at peace and his homeland doing well.
